Have you ever wondered if there was a way that you could manage your own problems more effectively? If so then maybe you should consider Personal Construct Psychology. Why not give Counselling London a call and see if we can help?
PCP or Personal Construct Psychology is a therapy program which was created by an American philosopher/writer by the name of George Kelly. For Kelly the individual patient is always in contraol and the therapist is taxed with helping them to move forward from any situation in which they may find themselves stuck.
The theory of Personal Construct Psychology decrees that when we are faced with distressful or difficult situations we can actually make ourselves even more unhappy and stressed by the way we perceive or interpret our troubles.
We, as humans are always looking for the deeper meanings of our lives and this often leads us to see the world from a personal standpoint. In fact we tend to build and live within our own worlds but most of us fail to realize that we built it so we can in fact remake it and thus find the way out of our own problems. To do this we may at first need the help of a therapist to show us how.
The PCP counsellor can help us by showing us ways to build the bridges so that we can see our problem in a different light and in fact become our own therapists. For example, the next time that you are facing an insurmountable problem, stop and ask yourself these questions.
Is it possible to see the problem differently?
How might someone else perceive this issue?
Will this situation affect me in a year, five years?
The purpose of these questions is to allow the client to challenge his or her negative perceptions so that they can change their own self defeating views and likely solve their own issues without the need of a therapist. PCP therapy is a very effective therapy because it helps the client to help themselves and thus become their own therapist.
The above outline is known as constructive alternativism. It is just one part of Kelly’s PCP therapy.
