Person Centered Counselling

Person-centered Therapy was developed by Carl Rogers and also known as Rogerian Therapy. This psychotherapy approach consists of group studies. Its main purpose is  to focus improving the client’s self control and self-esteem without the influence of their environment. In Person-Centered Therapy the term ‘self image’ has an important role. It believes that human beings develop a self-image since the very first day of their life. Everybody wishes to improve, maintain and gain skills, they just need a suitable environment to obtain this. Counselling London are able to offer Person centered counselling at their London clinic.

Person-Centered Therapy suggests that the psychological disorders are a result of frustration. Therefore this approach believes that there is only one reason for all disorders: Inhibition. All people are in need of ‘self actualization’ since their childhood, however the environmental issues may cause conflicts in this process and a cold war starts between the individual and their surroundings. With the increasing frustration the person gets tired and pulls themselves back. This is the beginning signs of the psychological disorder and the further problems. When suitable circumstances are provided, the client will find some relief with the guidance and support they receive within the therapeutic relationship.

The relationship between the client and the therapist is quite different compared to other therapy methods. There are main three rules for the therapist in Person-Centered Therapy.

1-The therapist has to behave equally to all their clients. They cannot discriminate clients according to their characters.

2-The therapist has to have a good ability to foster empathy. With this they can understand the clients feelings better and set up a trustworthy relationship with them.

3-The therapist has to be sincere and friendly to their clients. It is important to make the client feel comfortable during the sessions.

Person-Centered Therapy aims to improve the individual’s self esteem and obtain the suitable circumstances for the client’s self-actualization. The sessions are shorter compared to other therapy methods. Even though this technique is convenient to get over many difficulties, it is found inadequate and criticized by other therapy approaches. Person-Centered Therapy uses the same methods to treat all psychological disorders. Carl Rogers did not state a certain definitive theory to explain his technique.
